A World Covered in Plastic, and Vanishing Forests
Plastic: We Make Too Much and Recycle Too Little
A century ago, plastic was a rare material.
But now, over 460 million tons of plastic are produced globally each year.
The production has increased by 230 times over the past 70 years,
but only 9% of it is actually recycled.
Half of it is buried underground, some is burned,
and a staggering 22% flows into rivers and oceans without any treatment.
In 2019 alone, 22 million tons of plastic were released into the environment,
and over 100 million tons of plastic remain in the world's rivers and oceans.
We are now living in a world where the concern isn't how to recycle the plastic we've used,
but how much more plastic we will continue to create.
According to the OECD, global plastic production is expected to triple by 2060,
further exacerbating its environmental impact.

Where Trees Were Cut, Silence Remains
Forests, often called the lungs of the Earth, are slowly disappearing each year.
In 2023 alone, 28.3 million hectares of forest were lost, which is roughly the size of 40 million football fields.
Logging is not just about cutting down a tree. It means the loss of habitats for the creatures that lived there,
and the Earth is becoming unable to cope with the excess carbon it has to deal with.
Especially in South America's Gran Chaco region and the Amazon rainforest,
demand for wood products, including construction materials, has led to illegal logging and indiscriminate deforestation.
From 2001 to 2023, approximately 488 million hectares of forest were lost globally, of which 102 million hectares were due to
“commodity-driven deforestation.” This refers to deforestation for the production of wood-based products, including wood flooring.
